When you’re driving to a new destination, what is the first thing you do before putting the car in drive?

Plug your destination into the GPS. Watch with (sometimes) bated breath as the route turns a different color and the arrow points you in the right direction. Or so you hope.

It will tell you how many miles you have left, how many hours until you get where you want to go. The small children in the car with you will undoubtedly ask you every mile you travel, “Are we there yet?”

My parents’ usual response, after the hundredth time of my sister and I asking the same question in the car as kids, was, “Not yet. And if you ask me again, I’m turning this car around and we’re going home instead.”

Before you punched in the address, you decided where you were going and why.

You planned the route. You looked up restaurants, rest stops, and other notable stopping points along the way.

You set the goal.

Had you not set a final destination, you would be driving aimlessly.

So too should you have goals for your life, be it financial or otherwise. Goals give you purpose and direction, and the best goal is one that stretches you a little. Every client has a different goal in mind, and it is not our job to tell you what that is.

Deciding your end goal is step one. What is your goal, and why do you want to reach it?

Our job is to help you organize and orchestrate the things in your life so that you can reach your destination. Shank & Company, CPA is here to help you take that first step and to guide you every step along the way.
